about

I created this piece in the first few months of 2009. There are several fragments that were composed separately and in May of that year I decided to bring them together to create a single, unified piece. I feel the pieces flow rather well together – and maybe were always meant to be spliced together – because I worked on and finished all of them while I was in a single and focused frame of mind.

I understand that not everyone appreciates darker forms of music. But the way I see it, music – or any type of art – that only touches on happy-go-lucky, positive-reinforcement, “Life Is Good!” sentiments is, in my opinion, far too vapid and disingenuous to real life experience. Life is actually…well, pretty damn difficult. And my soul always seems to best connect with art that is equally difficult. It grounds me to reason and reality. Now don’t get me wrong. I love a good and sweet-tasting piece of pop music now and again, but that’s exactly what “pop music” is – it is candy. I don’t know how anyone can live off art such as that. I certainly can’t sustain a healthy life on just…candy.

Having said that, I’m not sure I really want to sustain my life on black sludge scraped off the walls of sewers, either. I suspect some people – especially pop music fans – may make a mistake (ha!) and listen to a darker piece like this and think that’s exactly what it is – shit worthy of a sewer. And I completely respect that opinion, as limited and lacking of vision as it may be. Many might not even consider it music at all. Hell, I’m not even sure I do. But as Dunmorul, I refuse to sit still and work in a single genre or style. I like to jump around and write all types of music and I never fell in love with the idea of juggling different projects. So basically, I try to create what I like to call “Interesting Listening Experiences”. I only use words like “music” or “piece” in describing this darker ambient material because when I get around to writing some text about it like I am here, well…I can use fewer keystrokes to write "music" instead of "interesting listening experience".
